Fun Things to do in Georgetown Maine
No visit to midcoast Maine or Georgetown would be complete without at least a day (it'll take more to do justice) spent at Reid State Park. We even include the pass with the cottage! Maine has very few sandy beaches, and this one is by far the best in the area. You can enjoy the sandy beaches, explore tidepools, ride the tide on a tube or board at the Litttle River or bridge, lounge in the lagoon, clam (license at town hall), cast for fish, bird watch, hike the trails, picnic, or indulge at the snack bar.
Charles' Pond on Route 127 is perfect to rinse off on the way home from the beach, or for a refreshing dip on those hot summer days. Only a few minutes from the cottage, it is where our kids learned to dive and the locals' favorite spot for a quick, and slightly warmer swim.
For authentic Maine Lobster in the rough you have two incredible choices - both within a few minutes by car, boat, or kayak. Mama D's (formerly known as Lisa's)
sits one cove South in lovely Gott's Cove (on the left). Here you can watch the laughing gulls, geese, and enjoy fresh Lobster, steamers, and fried clams, scallops, and fish. Bring your own wine or beer or buy a soda. There is a dock for boaters to tie up. Note: No one ran this operation summer of 2006 - we are hoping that it will be back 2007!
Not to be missed is the Five Islands' wharf (on the right) where you can get all of the above as well as crab cakes, ice cream, and a view of the "Prettiest Harbor in Maine." (below) This is also where you can come to fish (below, right)
on the town float and watch the tides from another perspective.
This is a busy place on summer evenings.
Georgetown Pottery - be sure to stop in Georgetown along Route 127. The creations here are so good, that I cannot decide one pattern. Someday I hope to have a full set of dishes from here, but until then I'll have to settle for unique pieces like my tide clock (a perfect gift for any surfer, boater, or general beach bum). I think certain members of my family like to come to our cottage just to check out what is new and buy more pieces to add to their collections (you know who you are)!.
Robinhood Marine Center - is located in beautiful Robinhood Cove. I first heard of Georgetown Maine as a sailor many years ago. In the long winters I would dream of places I'd go: Robinhood always popped up as one of those along the Maine coast. Little did I know that years later, I'd own a place near the Narrows and this famous cove. When in the area be sure to get a bite to eat at the Osprey Restaurant with a charming view of the boats in Robinhood (207-371-2530). If you bring a boat to our waterfront vacation rental, you can dock at the Osprey instead of drive.
Five Islands Lobster Company - sits in one of the most idyllic spots I have ever seen on the wharf in Five Islands Harbor. This spot is very popular with tourist and is worth a visit. Though many come for their lobster, my personal favorite is the Jenny Crab Cake Sandwich followed up with a New Hampshire made ice cream cone from Annabelle's on the wharf. A few years ago our wharf and one of these buildings appeared in an Acura commercial - it's that classic of a Maine scene. You'll enjoy watching the local fishermen pulling up their catch of lobsters each day.
Georgetown Country Store - 207-371-2106 - "last stop before the water for cold drinks" - says the sign to day travellers to Reid State Park. This is the place to stop for milk, cold drinks, great pizza, and forgotten sunscreen. On Rte. 127.

Things to Do in Maine - Midcoast Area
Fort Popham, Phippsburgh
Fort Popham is one of several forts built over three centuries near the mouth of the Kennebec River. The first fort built nearby in 1607 on Sabino Head, protected a brief and early English settlement, the Popham Colony. Later on the site of Fort Popham, a blockhouse and earthworks guarded against English aggressions during the war of 1812. The Civil War provided the impetus for constructing Fort Popham. Its function was replaced in 1905 by Fort Baldwin, a concrete fortification nearby. Fort Popham is 15 miles from Bath on Maine Route 209.
